Update: COSATU Protest Action & Empty Container Return Challenges

Dear Valued Client
We wish to advise customers that disruptions are currently being experienced on key transport routes servicing the Port of Durban as a result of the COSATU protest action underway today. Traffic congestion and access restrictions affecting the Bayhead precinct and surrounding road network are causing delays for transporters entering and exiting port facilities. As a result, container collections, deliveries, and general landside operations are being impacted. While vessel and waterside activities continue as scheduled, customers should anticipate delays to transport movements throughout the day.
We are currently assessing the effect on planned shipments and will communicate directly with customers should any cargo scheduled for movement this weekend be impacted.
In addition to the protest-related disruptions, the industry continues to face ongoing challenges with the return of empty import containers to shipping line-designated depots. Despite shipping lines confirming specific depots for empty container turn-ins, our transport teams are frequently arriving at these facilities only to be advised that the depot is at full capacity and unable to accept the container. In many instances, vehicles are redirected to alternative depots, sometimes requiring multiple reroutes before a container can be successfully returned.
These unforeseen diversions result in additional transport movements, cross-haul charges and in some cases, delays that may contribute to shipping line demurrage exposure due to extended turnaround times. While SCT actively engages with shipping lines and depot operators to seek leniency and mitigate these costs wherever possible, shipping lines generally do not accept responsibility for charges arising from depot congestion, capacity constraints or last-minute depot changes. Consequently, certain additional costs associated with these diversions may remain applicable. We remain committed to minimizing the impact on our clients and advocating for fair treatment when operational disruptions occur outside of our control.
We appreciate your patience, understanding and continued support during these ongoing operational challenges.
