Update: Durban Port & DGT Operational Congestion

Dear Valued Client

We would like to provide a further update regarding the ongoing operational disruptions at Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), specifically DCT Pier 2 / Durban Gateway Terminal (DGT).

The transition to the new DGT system, together with the current landside congestion, is creating operational challenges for transporters. Transporters are not yet receiving the required support and onboarding to the new system, making it difficult to obtain bookings and plan collections. At the same time, the congestion is contributing to downtime and limited access to the existing NAVIS system, further restricting real-time container and terminal information. The relevant technical teams are aware of the issue and are working to restore normal functionality. At this stage, no confirmed timeframe has been provided for full restoration.

Demurrage, Detention & Storage

DGT has confirmed that applicable tolerances and stack extensions may be granted as a result of the disruption. Please note that these extensions do not constitute a terminal extension. SCT will immediately submit written requests to the respective shipping lines for applicable demurrage and free detention extensions, covering the period from 13 August 2026 until normal landside operations are restored, where applicable.

We understand that additional charges are a concern for clients and will actively challenge any charges arising directly from the disruption where these are outside the control of the importer, SCT or our transport partners. Where a shipping line requires a disputed charge to be paid pending their review, the charge will unfortunately need to be raised to the importer and communicated accordingly. SCT will continue to pursue the dispute and seek a reversal or credit where justified. We are retaining the necessary records and correspondence to support these claims.

Our team continues to closely monitor all affected shipments and work with our transport partners, terminals and shipping lines to minimise the impact on your cargo. We appreciate your understanding while these challenges are being addressed and will provide further updates as material information becomes available.

Should you have any queries, please reach out to an SCT representative.
